HOKE COUNTY, N.C. — Three family members were killed Friday night in a two-vehicle wreck south of Raeford, officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

According to troopers, Jamie Oxendine, 43, of Raeford, was driving on North Old Wire Road at about 10 p.m. when his vehicle was hit by a car at the intersection with North Shannon Road.

Oxendine, his 40-year-old wife Mary Ann and 17-year-old son Austin were all killed the wreck.

Troopers said 29-year-old Rodolfo Marin Vela of St. Pauls, ran a stop sign on North Shannon Road. Vela and Martinez Misael-Tomas, a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to a local hospital.

Ray Crumpler said he and his wife were getting ready for bed Friday night when they heard the crash outside.

"We heard a loud crash," he said. "As soon as we heard it we immediately walked outside on the porch and saw the vehicles."

Crumpler said he had never seen anything like it before.

"Basically all three of them looked like it was instantaneous. I've seen wrecks, but the impact was pretty bad," he said. "I checked for a pulse and I didn't feel anything."

Vela was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, three counts of felony death by vehicle, stop sign violation, no drivers license, seat belt violation, open container of alcohol, and exceeding a safe speed for conditions.

"I mean you could smell the alcohol and see the beer cans in the truck," Crumpler said.

Vela was being held in the Hoke County Detention Center.

No other information about the wreck has been released.
