Thousands honor Afghanistan war vets at Fayetteville Parade
Thousands lined the streets of downtown Fayetteville Saturday morning for the 2014 Veterans Day Parade, the biggest parade honoring veterans in the state.
Posted — UpdatedThis year's parade recognized past, current and future Afghanistan war veterans, and Gen. Dan K. McNeill and CSM Steven R. England, both among the first to go into Afghanistan, served as grand marshals.
More than 90 units participated in the parade, including veterans' organizations, local high school bands, JROTC programs and military equipment.
Following the parade, there will be a ceremony at the North Carolina Veterans Park starting at 12:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, the Army Ground Forces Band of the U.S. Army Forces Command will present a "Salute to Veterans: Celebrating America’s Heroes." This free concert starts at 3 p.m. at the J.W. Seabrook Auditorium on the campus of Fayetteville State University. The show will feature music from the Revolutionary War to the present day.
