Thousands brave cold for 11th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge
Thousands of doughnut-loving (or hating) runners will take to the streets of Raleigh Saturday morning for the 11th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, which raises money for the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
Posted — UpdatedThe run began at North Carolina State University's Bell Tower at 8:30 a.m., and runners traveled 2.5 miles to the Krispy Kreme location at the intersection of Peace and Person streets. After consuming their glazed delicacies, participants ran back to the Bell Tower.
Drivers should expect partial road closures on Hillsborough, St. Mary's, North West, Peace and Person streets, along with North Boylan Avenue, from 8 a.m. until about noon.
Runners were dealing with bitterly cold temperatures for this year's race. Temperatures around start time were in the 20s, and daytime highs Saturday will top out in the upper 40s to low 50s.
Organizers added a new category this year called Dynamic Doughnut Duos. It allowed couples young and old to share a dozen doughnuts halfway through their 5-mile trek.
