When you are shopping for friends and family, don’t forget to have something for your four-legged loves under the tree! Here are a few of the gifts my dogs will find:
Antlers: Chewing is a great way to help keep your pets teeth clean and healthy. Antlers are more expensive than rawhides, but are safer and last much longer! One of my dogs is also allergic to beef, so antlers keep her from breaking out. I picked up a pack of two from Woof Gang Bakery in North Hills for $26.
Locally made treats: I love to shop small and shop local. Baxter and Lily will find special Christmas cookies from Gourmutt’s Bakery and Bone Appetite this Christmas. Both companies offer a variety of healthy options like grain-free, wheat-free and all-natural options.
Toys: Don’t let your pets get into mischief in the New Year. Fill their stockings with new toys. Cats love crinkly toys, feather wands and laser pointers. I also have some cat nip toys for my kitty Lacie who lives with my parents. The dogs usually get un-stuffed squeaky toys, ropes and Kongs to stuff peanut butter in. If you have a hamster, try a new cage with special tunnels for exploring. Fish may also like a new addition to their tanks!
ID collars: An ID tag from Pawdentify is a great alternative to metal tags which can wear overtime. Pawdentify tags are made from an eco-friendly polymer and pet information is literally infused into the tag so it can never rub off. They are made by a father-daughter duo who are also Duke alums. It’s also a good time to check to make sure your pets are also microchipped and that your contact information is up to date.
For the pet lover:
Most of us have several people on our list that are pet lovers or are people who already have everything they could need or want. Consider making a donation to a local animal shelter in their honor! Many local shelters have special donation cards to give to the person you are making a donation for.
Pictured is a calendar from the SPCA of Wake County that I had the opportunity to photograph and design. The Animal Protection Society of Durham and Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue also have calendars.
Gift certificates to training classes, groomers and pet boarding facilities are also a big hit!
