The Piedmont, the train that operates daily between Raleigh and Charlotte, is turning 20 this Memorial Day weekend. To celebrate, North Carolina's Amtrak has a few activities that train-loving kids might enjoy.

Visitors can watch the trains pull in and enjoy free refreshments on Saturday and Monday, May 25. There also will be drawings throughout the day to win a commemorative anniversary coin and a round trip for two on the Piedmont or Carolinian within North Carolina.

North Carolina's Amtrak also is offering a special kids discount on select days this month. Kids ages 2 to 12 can ride for $5 from May 23 to May 25 and through the end of May on Tuesdays through Thursdays with a paid adult. The deal is good for up to two kids per adult. Use the discount code V615 when purchasing a ticket through ncbytrain.org.
You don't have to travel far, Julia Casadonte, marketing specialist for North Carolina's Amtrak, tells me. You could hop on board in Raleigh and go to Durham for a few hours, then turn around and come back on the mid-day or evening train. Or, you could hop on board in Durham, for example, and travel to Greensboro for the afternoon.

To see the trains on Saturday or Monday (not Sunday!) at the Raleigh, Cary and Durham depots, be sure to be at the station at one of these times. It's best to get there 30 minutes ahead of time.
