Tethered, fire chief fought flash flood to save motorist
As the flood water begin to recede in parts of North Carolina, stories of heroism continue to come to the surface.
Posted — UpdatedOn Saturday, firefighters in Priceville ended up tying the chief to a fire truck and lowered him to a car where a woman was trapped in flash flooding.
The rope left a mark on the truck because firefighters had to fight the current to pull Chief James Powell out of the water.
Firefighters said when Powell got to the woman, the car started moving and he disappeared in the water for more than a minute. They then drove the truck in the opposite direction to pull him to safety.
"I lost my wedding ring in the scuffle in the water," Powell said.
His wife, Bonnie Powell, is also in law enforcement. She said they will replace the ring as soon as they can get to a store.
The woman who was trapped in the flood waters was able to climb onto a tree until the Rocky Mount Fire Department was able to rescue her.
