ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A 15-year-old was shot and killed early Saturday in the 700 block of East Highland Avenue in Rocky Mount, police said.

Authorities responded to the area at about 12:30 a.m. and found Brian Freeman dead outside of a home.

According to friends, Freeman was walking home with a friend when a car pulled up and started firing.

Freeman's father, Alfonzo Beverly, said his son's death could have been prevented.

"I feel like something else could have been done besides this gang banging. It's gang related," said Beverly.

Police have not said if the shooting is gang related, but Beverly said he knows what his son was up to.

"He's been in a gang for a while now and I've been trying my best to get him out," Beverly said.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the incident to call the Rocky Mount Police Department at 252-972-1411 or Twin County Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.
