Teen shot in Rocky Mount; family searching for answers

Officials said they believe the teen was struck by a stray bullet that was fired from two groups of individuals in a dispute near the victim’s home.

The victim’s family identified the teen as McKayda Dracy.

Tracy Dracy, the victim’s aunt, said McKayda Dracy is a student at Edwards Middle School in Rocky Mount.

“My aunt came and got me. I thought she was joking, but when I went in there and saw all that blood, I wasn’t hurt; I was crying,” said McKayda Dracy’s brother, Lamont Dracy, 12.

Dracy was transported by Nash County EMS to UNC Nash Hospital and later airlifted to Vidant Hospital in Greenville.

Authorities said the victim was in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported from the incident.

“I don’t give a damn who did it or who the bullets were for; it wasn’t for Shay [McKayda]. It wasn’t for anybody in this house,” said Daniel Dracy, McKaya’s father.
