ROSEBORO, N.C. — A Sampson County teen was killed Friday night when the car he was traveling in ran off the roadway, hit a tree and overturned on the shoulder of Mintz Road, south of Roseboro.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Bethany Pilkington, 18, was driving on Mintz Road about a half mile from N.C. Highway 411 when she rounded a curve too fast and lost control.

Ronald Lucas, 16, who was in the back seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Pilkington was treated and released from Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Two other passengers – 18-year-old Johnathan Herring and 18-year-old Allison Helms – were transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where they were listed in good condition Sunday afternoon.

No one in the car was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.
