Jordan High student dies after Durham crash
A Jordan High School student died Friday after police said his vehicle crossed the center line and into the southbound lanes on Highway 55 in Durham.
Posted — UpdatedPolice said the crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. when 16-year old Tyreic Elyja Hemphill's 1997 Honda Civic crossed the median and traveled into the path of a 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by Patrick Bailey, 36, of Durham.
According to investigators, Bailey hit his brakes, but was unable to avoid a collision. The crash caused both cars to go down an embankment.
Hemphill was trapped in his vehicle for several minutes before he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
In a statement released Saturday by Jordan High School Principal Jerome Leathers the 16-year-old senior is described as a bright young man.
"Remembering just a couple of days ago we were talking in the hallway about getting his college applications in order and anticipating graduation on June 11, 2014. Everyone here at Jordan High School will miss Tyreic dearly and our thoughts go out to his family and friends," Leathers said.
Bailey was taken to the hospital for non life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
