Tax-Preparers Indicted in False Returns Scheme
Four tax preparers have been indicted on charges they prepared fraudulent tax returns four years ago, authorities said Friday.

Evans, 49, Tasha Battle, 28, and Bertha Battle, 28, all of Rocky Mount, were charged with 45 counts of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. by obtaining fraudulent claims from the Internal Revenue Service and making false, fictitious or fraudulent claims against the U.S.
An indictment alleged that the women worked at Independent Tax Service in Rocky Mount in 2004 and filed false 2003 tax returns by inflating people's wages or withholdings, listing fake dependents or wrongly claiming education credits. The moves allowed people to qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, according to the indictment.
The women each face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charges and five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the false claims charges.
