Take the Kids: Tanglewood's Festival of Lights
Bring blankets and pillows for your children to snuggle up in the car during a road trip to this holiday light show.
Posted — UpdatedThe routine has been the same every year. Once off the exit, we stop for restroom breaks and light snacks (if we didn't bring our own). Portable toilets are available throughout the park, just so you know. Then, we get in line for the excitement.
I suggest having music playlists and other things your kids enjoy in case the wait is long. There's usually a radio station advertised that solely plays Christmas music. It's fun to belt out those holiday tunes for a while. However, if your kids are like mine, that'll get old pretty quickly.
In our back seat, you'll find blankets, gloves, scarves and hats. All the warm things! Once we reach the lights, we like turning up the heat and riding with windows down for better views. The blankets make it extra cozy.
Halfway through the park is a gift shop. It's located at the Red Barn and is filled with all kinds of goodies. Most of them are created by local artists whether food items, crafts or clothing. We've bought a few things over the years but mostly stroll the aisles to see what's new.
The next stop is S'moresville. It's right outside of the gift shop. You can purchase a roasting stick with marshmallows or s'mores kits on-site. Super convenient and festive to warm ourselves by the fire. For an extra treat, purchase a cup of hot cocoa. One year, we brought big thermoses of our own from home.
If you're near Clemmons or just up for the drive, head out there and create a new tradition. Or, visit to make new memories. I think you'll be more than satisfied.
Lastly, accompanying our blankets in the back seat are pillows. My daughters have so much fun, they fall asleep on the way home. Happens every year without fail. I expect nothing less from my youngest this time around. My teen, however, is able to hang a bit longer now. Maybe she'll keep me company on the way home.
