Threat of severe storms to remain in Triangle through weekend

Storms began popping up just before 4 p.m., which brought strong winds, heavy rain and small hail to the area.

"It certainly was an active afternoon; we had numerous severe thunderstorm warnings, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said. "No severe weather out there right now, and we don't expect any for the remainder of the night."

Strong storms knocked down trees in Durham and even caused on to fall onto a house on Roxboro Street. In Rolesville, streets were flooded and ponds were overflowing because of heavy rains, according to Mayor Frank Eagles.

In Fayetteville, a driver was trapped inside a truck in the 3700 block of Fayetteville Road after a tree fell onto the vehicle. Firefighters had to cut tree limbs to reach the driver, who was taken to the hospital with head and back injuries.

A tree also fell on a home at 1227 Berkley Street, but no injuries were reported.

"All of this should die down gradually as we go through the night, and by daybreak tomorrow we should wake up to dry weather," Maze said. "But it will all blow back up tomorrow afternoon.

"We will see more rain tomorrow, so if you didn't get a whole lot today you have an opportunity tomorrow."

Maze said the chance for storms will stick around for the weekend, although temperatures will return to normal both Saturday and Sunday.

"We're going to go mostly cloudy in the morning with a small chance of a shower, but it's more likely with the heating of the day that we'll see showers and storms develop in the afternoon," he said.
