CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities have captured a man suspected in five bank robberies across North Carolina.

The Charlotte division of the FBI announced that 60-year-old Clyde Allen Nixon was taken into custody late Tuesday morning by police in Kingsport, Tenn.

FBI Charlotte spokeswoman Shelly Lynch said officers received information on Nixon's whereabouts, and when they tried to take him into custody, he fled the scene in a vehicle but was arrested a short time later.

Lynch said Nixon is now facing charges in Tennessee in addition to numerous charges related to bank robberies in North Carolina. Nixon is currently being held in the Kingsport Police Department's holding facility.

Authorities said they believe Nixon used a handgun to rob the PNC Bank at 2412 Wycliff Road in Raleigh last week.

Before the PNC robbery, authorities believe Nixon robbed a Wells Fargo bank in Asheville on Feb. 9, an RBC Centura bank in Buncombe County on Feb. 24, a First Citizens Bank in Asheville on March 20 and a First Bank in Candler on March 30.
