Suspect shot, killed during Cumberland County attempted robbery

An unidentified man was shot and killed early Thursday during an attempted robbery outside a home in Hope Mills, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — An unidentified man was shot and killed early Thursday during an attempted robbery outside a home in Hope Mills, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said gunfire erupted outside a home in the 3600 block of Lubbock Drive at about 1:30 a.m. after three men tried to approach the victim when he entered his car. The victim shot one of the suspects, resulting in his death, and was also shot in the abdomen.

The victim told investigators that the suspects pointed guns at him and demanded money. He then pulled out a revolver and fired shots from his vehicle, hitting one of the suspects. The victim was also shot.

After the gunshots, the three suspects fled the area. Authorities found one of them on Lubbock Drive with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim, whose name was not released, was being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Thursday morning.
