Man charged after shootout with Wilson County deputies
Deputies were called to a home at 5868 Bottoms Dairy Road in Elm City around 6 p.m. to investigate reports of gunshots. When they arrived, the suspect came out of the house and started firing.

Deputies were called to a home at 5868 Bottoms Dairy Road in Elm City around 6 p.m. to investigate reports of gunshots. When they arrived, authorities said, Ashby Silver, 65, came out of the house and started firing.
At least one deputy returned fire and hit Silver, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released a few hours later and charged with three counts of assault on a government official and discharging a firearm within 300 feet of a residence.
Silver was being held Tuesday night at the Wilson County jail under a $100,000 bond.
Several of Silver's family members were inside the home at the time, but no one was injured.
The sheriff's office said they believe Silver was intoxicated.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure whenever an officer fires at a suspect.
