A suspect was arrested Saturday evening in connection with a fatal shooting in Samson County.

<b>HARRELLS, N.C.</b> — A suspect was arrested Saturday evening in connection with a fatal shooting in Samson County.<br />

Johnnie Newkirk, 69, of 710 Wilbur Pridgen Road in Harrells, was taken into custody after deputies found a man who had suffered at least one gunshot wound at Newkirk’s home.

The victim was airlifted to New Hanover Medical Center, where he later died.<br />

Investigators said the shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Saturday during an altercation between the victim and Newkirk, who has been charged with second-degree murder. He was being held without bond late Sunday morning.
