DURHAM, N.C. — Sushi and modern Japanese restaurant, Basan, will open on Jan. 20, Eschelon Experiences announced Monday.

Located in the American Tobacco Campus' Diamond View III building, Basan will feature specialty sushi rolls and appetizers and entrees inspired by West Coast Japanese cuisine. The bar will offer an extensive sake collection.

The 6,600 square-foot restaurant's physical address is 359 Blackwell St. It's dining room will have a mix of rustic materials and sleek modern design. For guests wanting to dine outside of the main room, 20 people can fit in an enclosed kotatsu area and another 11 can be seated at the sushi bar. More space is also available on the large outdoor patio which overlooks the DPAC.

Basan's executive chef, Toshio Sakamaki, is no stranger to Eschelon. He worked at the company's other Japanese restaurant, Mura.

This is Eschelon Experiences' first restaurant in Durham. The hospitality company has five other restaurants in the Triangle.

“Expanding to a city like Durham, known for its food scene and culture, is a big deal for Eschelon,” Gaurav “G” Patel, founder and president of Eschelon Experiences, said. “We’re especially excited about Basan’s location in the heart of downtown.”
