ZEBULON, N.C. — A half-dozen dogs rescued from a Zebulon home last week are up for adoption, a Wake County spokeswoman said Thursday.

The dogs were among 100 animals seized March 30 from a Zebulon home. The conditions at the home were so bad that most of the animals did not survive, authorities said.

Their owners, Johnny and Mary Morton, were charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

The dogs are available for adoption Wake County Animal Control Center. They have heartworm, which is treatable, said Wake County Public Affairs Manager Sarah Williamson-Baker.

The animal shelter is also looking for donations to help with the dogs' veterinary expenses, she said.
