RALEIGH, N.C. — An area of high pressure was taking control of the weather in central North Carolina early Wednesday, setting up a multi-day stretch that will include cool temperatures and abundant sunshine.

Much of the Triangle saw about half an inch of rain Tuesday as a low pressure system moved slowly up the East Coast. That system will continue its northeasterly trek Wednesday, allowing dry air to set up shop.

"We'll see nothing but sunshine Wednesday, but we will be chilly," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

Daytime highs will climb to near 50 degrees during the afternoon, and northerly winds could gust to 20 mph.

Overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s early Thursday, slightly below normal for mid-December.

The pattern will be similar throughout the rest of the work week and weekend, as highs climb into the low 50s and lows hover between the upper 20s and freezing.

"Enjoy the sunshine for the next few days, because we haven't seen a lot of it here recently," Gardner said.
