CARY, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Education voted Tuesday to temporarily increase pay for substitute bus drivers from $11.89 to $15 an hour.

The measure aims to encourage substitute drivers to help out in the wake of a busing debacle that started off the traditional calendar school year. The school system took dozens of buses off the road as a cost-saving measure this school year, but hastily added them back after a flood of complaints from parents about late or absent buses.

The pay increase is effective from Sept. 10 through Oct. 31 and should cost the school system around $49,000.
