Study: Raleigh needs more public transit
In 2005, Raleigh commuters wasted more than 18 million hours of additional time on the roads and more than 11 million gallons of additional gas due to traffic congestion.

The findings were part of a report released Tuesday by the Texas Transportation Institute.
Traffic congestion would be much worse if not for public transportation in the area, according to the report. Raleigh’s public transit system prevented 742,000 of additional time for commuters.
Rob Thompson, a policy advocate with the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group, said the report points out the need for additional public transportation in Raleigh.
“For decades, we’ve tried to fight traffic congestion by building new roads,” said Thompson. “This report is further evidence of the failure of that strategy. Instead we need to expand bus and rail systems to reduce the number of drivers on the road."
The additional wasted time and fuel cost spent by Raleigh commuters in 2005 is the equivalent of $346 million.
