FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Juvenile charges were pending Thursday after a 9-year-old boy at Cliffdale Road Elementary School stabbed a girl in his class in the back with a pencil, authorities said.

The boy argued with the 10-year-old girl after he discovered his pencil box was missing from his desk, authorities said. He stabbed her, puncturing the upper portion of her back, they reported.

The girl didn't require emergency medial assistance and returned to class later in the day, authorities said.

The pencil box was found in the girl's possession.

The boy could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, pending the completion of an investigation, authorities said. His parents picked him up from school, and school administrators were discussing what disciplinary action to take.
