RALEIGH, N.C. — The Triangle and central North Carolina saw rain and scattered thunderstorms Thursday, thanks to Hurricane Arthur and a cold front moving east across the state.
But those storms – some of which caused down trees in Raleigh – are temporary as the cold front moves through the area Thursday night and Arthur – gaining strength as it headed toward the North Carolina coast – moves away by Friday.

"Fortunately, because Arthur is picking up speed, it does look like our Fourth of July is going to be OK," WRAL meteorologist Aimee WIlmoth said.

Winds appear to have caused a tree to fall on top of a car at the corner of St. Mary's Street and Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, temporarily causing traffic issues.

On Coldwater Court in north Raleigh, a tree fell into a cul-de-sac, and a tree planted in a median in the Crossroads area of Cary also fell.

Come Friday, though, conditions will be nice – clear skies with no rain in sight.

Temperatures reached the upper 80s to lower 90s Thursday. Friday's highs will reach into the mid-80s.

Those clear conditions and temperatures persist for the holiday weekend.

Despite several Independence Day celebrations being postponed along the coast, most local events were still scheduled, as of Thursday morning.

Rocky Mount, however, canceled its 43rd annual Independence Celebration that was planned for Thursday night. A new date and time has not been set.
