STOVALL, N.C. — Stovall residents were being advised Tuesday to boil water to reduce the possibility of bacterial contamination while the town makes repairs to the water system.

There are periods of low pressure and outages because of water main breaks along N.C. Highway 15, according to a statement from Mayor Janet Parrott. The low pressure can increase the potential of bacteria entering the system.

Parrott said the water will be tested to ensure its safety once the repairs are completed.

Meanwhile, residents are urged to boil any water for consumption vigorously for one minute to kill any bacteria. That includes water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or food preparation.

Stovall-Shaw Elementary School was closed Tuesday because of the water problems.
