Exciting things are happening in Little Washington this summer.

With three new breweries in town, including a rooftop lounge that has a stunning view of the river, you’re going to want to make your plans to visit the lively yet quaint waterfront town.

The Mulberry House Brewery + Rooftop Lounge

If you’re looking for a unique fusion of international food, innovative cocktails and a stunning view of the Pamlico River, visit The Mulberry House. The rooftop bar and lounge offer seasonal selections such as Asian-inspired sushi donburi and Peruvian-inspired ceviche.

Their craft brews are worth checking out, as well.

“Our goal right now is to get local people in the area into the craft beer culture. We want them to try things that are different from their traditional beer preferences, but brews that are still in the realm of outside drinking, patio, rooftop and on the boat,” said brewer Colin Smith. “But we want to keep our partnerships with local stuff, too. With Pitt Street Brewery coming in and Two Rivers Alehouse across the street, we want to make sure we’re helping to grow the beer culture in the community, and not trying to make a competition amongst breweries.”

Smith says three new beers will be fully on tap this summer.

“We hope one will have a name that becomes synonymous with the town, and then we’ll have two that will rotate through as we try different fruits to make flavors that people will want to experiment with,” he said. “Our goal is to focus on education and experimentation.”

Venue Manager Montana Lausch says that the rooftop is available for private events as well.

“We host wedding parties, dinners and corporate events,” said Lausch. “Our menu is very inclusive. We’ve just ended the Asian theme and will be serving a Mediterranean-inspired menu for the summer.”

Other events they’ve hosted on the rooftop include yoga sessions, floral arranging workshops and live music nights.

The Mulberry House Brewery also serves specialty coffee drinks and breakfast, as well as a weekend brunch with live jazz music.

Two Rivers Alehouse

Current in-house brews at the Two Rivers Alehouse include a Kolsch called The Pamlico Lite. Co-owner Bubba Summerlin says some other exciting flavors are coming this summer.

“We will be brewing a strawberry gose, which is a sour beer — we think it will be a very popular beer,” said Summerlin. “We’ll definitely be brewing more fruited beers for the summer, maybe even fruiting some of our pale ales and Hefeweizen.”

Co-owner Tim Jackson says they’ve intentionally researched and listened to what people in the community want with respect to craft brews.

“Our motto is ‘We have a beer for everyone,’” he said, “so we try to keep at least fourteen taps open to offer a variety of beers.”

Seasonal bar menu changes will ramp up for summer, as well. New dips, appetizers and flatbread pizzas will be offered to accompany the summer brews. The Alehouse also has a six-seat golf cart that can pick up and drop off from the waterfront and downtown. The Alehouse is planning a celebration for their first anniversary at the end of July.

Pitt Street Brewing Company

Pitt Street Brewery, located in nearby Greenville, is opening a taproom on the beautiful Washington waterfront in late May of 2022. General Manager Brianna Long says that the beer will be brewed at their Greenville location, then transported to Washington.

“We have four flagship beers that will be on tap: our Pactolus Lager, Code of Conduct Hazy IPA, Haychaser Kolsch and either our Dapple Dog Dry Stout or The Way Life Goes, which is a kettle sour,” she said. “We will also have a permanent food truck onsite.”

Long says there will be plenty of inside and outside seating, and that the taproom will be dog-friendly.

“We will have a big outside space right along the river, and some on the front of the building, as well,” said Long. “We are really excited to be part of the growing craft beer community in Washington — we want it to be a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for everyone.”

Long says the taproom will be open seven days a week throughout the summer.
