State Fair: Looking for cheap snacks? Head to Wake FFA concessions
If you're looking for cheap, kid-friendly snacks at the N.C. State Fair, look no further than the Wake County FFA concession.
You'll find it right next to the Children's Barnyard, which teens from FFA programs across Wake County also staff, and across from the Village of Yesteryear. This week, a vocal group of teens were pulling in customers with a big lure - the cheapest drinks and snacks at the fair.
Everything they sell is just $1 - from cold water, sodas, juices, sweet tea, coffee and hot chocolate to snacks, including Goldfish, fruit snacks and candy.
It's been a popular spot for fairgoers for years. Camber Starling, the agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Heritage High School, said it's been operating for at least 15 years. It's not far from the fair's gates five through eight.
"As people come in, they grab something from us and, as they leave, they grab something from us," Starling tells me.
The FFA once was called the Future Farmers of America, but the name changed to just the acronym more than two dozen years ago. Today, Starling tells me that a lot of the program's focus is on the scientific side of agriculture and farming and teaching students leadership skills.
Money raised through sales at the fair will help cover the cost of leadership programs for high school students involved in FFA across Wake County. So, in addition to the low prices, that's another reason to stop by the Wake County FFA booth. It's open during the fair's operating hours.
