Julia Sims: You just said what to me?

We've all heard that old phrase, "kids say the darnedest things." It's tired, overused and it is absolutely true.

We’ve all heard that old phrase, “kids say the darnedest things.” It’s tired, overused and it is absolutely true. Kids, particularly young ones, have no filter. They call it like they see it, and that can be absolutely refreshing!

Through the years I’ve jotted down some things that Will has said - things that have made me whip my head around or just plain made me laugh out loud.

Here are just a few. (No. 10 is my favorite.)

1. One morning after I’d just woken up Will told me, “Mama, your hair makes you look like a big curly Poodle.”

2. “Mama, my feet smell like rotting skulls and decomposing bones.”

3. When Will first started elementary school, he told me I need to pick him up for lunch and take him back to school afterwards. When I asked why, he said, “The smell of the cafeteria hurts my nose.” I told him to get used to it.

4. “Mama has spines! Mama has spines!” Me: “No Will, I need to shave my legs.”

5. I was trying to show Will how to do something and I said, “In my world, this is how...” He quickly put his hand up and said, “But Mama, this isn’t YOUR world. It’s God’s world.” Good point little dude.

6. One day when I was dropping Will off at preschool, he wrapped his arms around my neck and squeezed as hard as he could. Then he said, “I love you tight.” That’s been our saying ever since.

7. “Mama, it would be really great if you’d get a job at Chuck E. Cheese.”

8. Mike’s family was headed home after a weekend visit with us. Will stuck out his bottom lip and said, “Grammie, don’t leave!” Then he pointed at me and said, “Mama, you go.”

9. When I told Will about my husband’s friend who died, Will asked where he’d live if Mike and I died. I told him with relatives. His response? “Well, since you’ll be dead anyway and won’t be here, can I just go stay at a friend’s house?”

10. “Mama, if you died, Daddy and I would miss you. If you died right here on the carpet, we could keep you here and look at you. We’d just tell everyone to step over you so they wouldn’t get their feet dirty.”
