Julia Sims: Turning 10

A decade sounds like an awfully long time, doesn't it? Funny then, how quickly it's passed.

A decade sounds like an awfully long time, doesn’t it? Funny then, how quickly it’s passed.

My little boy is about to turn 10 - the big double digits - and I’ve been asking myself: How the heck did we get to this point? It seems like just yesterday we were bringing him home from the hospital.

As our family approaches this milestone birthday, I’ve given a lot of thought about what Will has brought to our lives. Having a child puts life in perspective: what matters and what doesn’t.

I’ve learned to live with a messy house. I’ve stopped pressuring myself to try and be perfect. I’ve figured out the value in indulging lazy Saturday mornings watching cartoons. I’ve become more patient. I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy the moment.

My appreciation for my own parents has deepened. My circle of “mom friends” has expanded. My Pokémon knowledge has increased. My admiration for teachers has grown. My days are full and my heart is whole.

It’s amazing to me how in the span of ten years, one little boy has had such a huge impact on every facet of my life ... but he has. Call me blessed.
