Hiker discovers body near creek in Chatham County

A body was found Thursday near a creek in Chatham County.

Around 4:10 p.m., the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from a hiker who had discovered a body near a creek near 12500 U.S. 15-501, near the Walmart, in the northern part of Chatham County, close to the border with Orange County.

Investigators found no apparent indications of foul play and do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The body has been tentatively identified, but the individual’s identity is not being disclosed at this time until the family is notified.
