One person shot in Chatham County, deputies search for shooter

Chatham County deputies arrested a man who allegedly fired shots into a car, hitting one person Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Moore Mountain Road and Hamlets Chapel Road, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators arrested Brian Julius Blackwell, 21, of Pittsboro on Friday at Seaforth High School where he was picking up another student. Blackwell is not a student at the high school. Upon searching the vehicle Blackwell was driving, drugs were discovered, which lead to Blackwell’s arrest.

Sky 5 video showed the bullet holes in a white sedan a few miles down the road from the shooting scene. The sheriff's office said two people were in that car, including the person who was hit and taken to the hospital by EMS.

The 17-year-old victim was treated and has been released from the hospital.

Blackwell is charged with the following:

  • Maintaining, selling, delivering and possessing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school
  • Possession of cocaine
  • Maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substance
  • Discharging a weapon into occupied property
  • Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Blackwell’s bond was set at $125,000. He is scheduled to appear in Chatham District Court on May 15.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 919-542-2911.
