Storm threats continue Thursday, clear up for Friday night football
Although thunderstorm warnings that popped up late Thursday afternoon were cancelled by 7 p.m., more strong or severe storms are possible Thursday night.

WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said that Wake County could see more storms with damaging winds and lightning before the day is done. The additional storms are caused by an out-flow boundary, which brought in a front of cold air following the initial round of rain.
“When these mini-cold fronts come along, they lift the unstable air as they arrive at a given location, and if that lifting is significant enough, it generates new thunderstorm activity,” Fishel said.
Storms moving in from Greensboro and Charlotte may also pose a threat to the area, but the skies are expected to clear by tomorrow, which means that high school football games will not be in danger of cancellation, said Fishel.
For the weekend, there is a threat of more thunderstorms and showers on Saturday afternoon and evening, which Fishel said could pose a threat to college football games. The University of North Carolina, North Carolina State and Duke universities all play at home Saturday evening.
The storms are expected to bring in cooler air, resulting in more fall-like weather.
“Once it goes by, the floodgates will be open for much cooler and less humid conditions which should give us a real taste of fall as we head into the early portions of next week,” Fishel said.
