Storm threat abates as 'stellar' weekend starts
Scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the afternoon Friday across south-central North Carolina thanks to a cold front that will usher in beautiful weather for the holiday weekend.

A severe thunderstorm watch that was in effect for Wake, Wilson, Harnett, Edgecombe and Nash counties was canceled about 5 p.m. Counties to the south and east of the Triangle remain under a watch until 9 p.m.
"Even if you're in that watch area, I would go ahead with outdoor plans," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said. "Just keep an eye on things."
As the passing coldfront clears, cooler, drier air will set up shop. Saturday morning will be noticeably cooler, and daytime highs over the weekend will be in the low to mid-80s. Overnight lows will dip into the 50s both Saturday and Sunday morning.
"Things are definitely looking up, and the weekend is going to be stellar," Fishel said.
Memorial Day could include a scattered thunderstorm, but much of central North Carolina will stay dry as temperatures head back into the upper 80s.
