Steamy Tuesday could end in storms

RALEIGH, N.C. — Showers and thunderstorms could once again have an impact on central and eastern North Carolina Tuesday as warm, moist air filters into the area behind a warm front, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"We could see showers and thunderstorms on and off all day today," she said. "They'll be moving through the area from south to north as all this moisture moves up from the Gulf of Mexico."

Fog was a factor in some spots during the early-morning commute, but didn't create any major issues on Triangle roadways. Officials in Mecklenburg County, Virginia delayed schools one hour because of thick fog.

Bu noon, temperatures had climbed into the high 70s in the Triangle, and humidity topped 80 percent.

Tuesday's warmer temperatures will accompany a more unstable air mass that's settling into the area after the passage of a warm front. There is a 70 percent chance for storms through the afternoon.

"While the chance of severe storms today is quite low, an isolated cell with strong wind gusts or a tornado is not out of the question," Gardner said.

Wednesday's weather will be similar as overnight lows hover in the upper 60s and high temperatures climb back into the mid-80s. Areas to the east of the Triangle will be especially prone to showers and storms Wednesday afternoon, but most of the state will remain mostly cloudy with the chance for rain.

Sunshine returns on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but temperatures will remain in the low 80s.

"We have a front that will move through the area Saturday night to bring us our next cooling trend," Gardner said. "Sunday's high could be in the mid-60s, about 20 degrees cooler than Saturday."
