State shutters Fayetteville pharmacy, recalls products

The board also shut down Prescription Center Pharmacy, at 915 Hay St., and is trying to get owner Gary Newton to surrender his pharmacist license. Another pharmacist at Prescription Center, Gerald Mizelle, has already surrendered his license.

The recall covers items made between Sept 10, 2014, and March 10, 2015. Prescription Center distributed the recalled compounded products throughout the United States and in Canada, officials said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a nationwide alert about the recall Thursday.

Jay Campbell, executive director of the North Carolina pharmacy board, said state inspectors determined Prescription Center wasn't testing its products to ensure sterility, stability and potency.

"There's always a risk to those products could be contaminated or not as potent as they are labeled or more potent than they are labeled being, and a patient could experience an illness or other adverse effect as a result of using that medication," Campbell said.

There have been no reports of any injury caused by any recalled product, he said.

"Given the shortfalls that we observed in their compounding practices and in an abondance of caution, we're advising folks who received those products to go ahead and destroy them," Campbell said.
