Clarence Alexander Bender, a Democrat running for state Senate, was arrested Thursday morning in Nash County on charges of selling opiates.

<b>CASTALIA, N.C.</b> — Clarence Alexander Bender, a Democrat running for state Senate, was arrested Thursday morning in Nash County on charges of selling prescription narcotics.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office investigated Bender, 54, for two months, buying more than 100 pills from him. He is charged with three counts of trafficking opium or heroin and with maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of drug trafficking.

He was being held in the Nash County jail under $300,000 secured bond.

Bender told Vote-NC.org that he serves as a commissioner for the Town of Castalia. He is running for North Carolina Senate District 11 against incumbent Republican Buck Newton.
