Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has launched the “Give Five – Read Five” campaign to encourage elementary school students to read during their summer break from school.
State Superintendent June Atkinson is asking residents and businesses to donate five new or gently used books to their local elementary school. The books will be given to students on the last day of school.
Businesses that donate 50 or more books will be recognized, and the top three schools that collect the most books will receive prizes.
Studies show that reading during the school break helps students with retention and other skills.
