DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Sheriff's Office on Thursday asked Gov. Beverly Perdue to add $5,000 in state money to the reward being offered for information leading to an arrest in a fatal shooting last week at a Durham tire store.

Naomi Wright, 65, was at the front desk of J.T. Tire, at 2202 E. Geer St., last Friday afternoon when a man came in and started shooting, authorities said. Wright and Abdelgadir Mergany Abdelganir, 32, a cab driver who was at the shop to get a tire fixed, were both killed.

Store employee Terry Shaw, 51, and customer Javier Ramirez remain hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Durham Crime Stoppers is already offering a reward of up to $1,500 in the case. A response to the appeal for state reward money is expected to take several weeks.

“I want to assure the public that our investigators are working hard to bring this case to a close,” Sheriff Michael Andrews said in a statement. “I also want to thank those people that have called in with information. Every tip is important, and I encourage people to continue calling the tip lines if they know something."

The gunman was described as a black man, about 6 feet tall, with a tattoo on the left side of his face. He was wearing a brightly colored T-shirt and reportedly fled the scene in a silver sedan.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the sheriff's office tip line at 919-560-0940 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
