The N.C. Museum of History is a contender in a national contest to win a $50,000 grant to build a hands-on discovery gallery for kids.

The Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away more than $1 million to 60 ideas that "move communities forward." Only 10 grants will be awarded in the $50,000 category.

The hands-on gallery at the downtown Raleigh museum would inspire kids (and adults) to explore history. It would be an important addition to the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association, which encourages the study of state and local history and is based in clubs at schools and communities across the state. The association is geared toward kids in grades four through twelve.

Right now, the museum has no state funding for new exhibits.

Voting runs through May 31. You can vote every day between now and then. There are several ways to vote for the project. Here's how to do it:

You can also send more votes through Power Votes. Look for a unique 10-character alphanumeric code on specially marked Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Max products in participating locations. Enter that code on the Power Vote page at www.refresheverything.com to find out how much your Power Vote code is worth: 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 or 100 votes.
And the history museum project isn't the only North Carolina project in the running. Click here to find a Facebook page with details about more of them, including several at local schools.
