We went to the State Farmers' Market in Raleigh on Saturday and it was packed with people picking up plants and produce.

Lots of fresh veggies and strawberries are in season right now. And to mark the berries, the market will hold its annual and very popular Strawberry Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday.

They'll have free samples of strawberry ice cream, visits from Suzy the Strawberry, a dessert contest, free recipes and more, including lots of fresh, local strawberries for sale.

These are popular events, which often bring out school groups. I recommend getting there early.

Other days coming up:

Blueberry Day is June 20, Peach Day is July 11 and Watermelon Day is Aug. 1 ... those are all Thursdays.

The market is at the intersection of Interstate 40 and Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh.

And, of course, for more places to get fresh strawberries in the region, check our strawberry database!
