State Fair Taste Test: Thanksgiving Eggroll

RALEIGH, N.C. — Woody's Grill is hoping to capture the comfort food of Thanksgiving into one deep fried egg roll.
This is the same Woody's who have a location in City Market in downtown Raleigh. The restaurant's N.C. State Fair stand is known for its deep fried egg roll combinations, including last year's bacon pimento cheeseburger roll.
N.C. State Fair Thanksgiving Eggroll

New this year is the Thanksgiving egg roll - filled with turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberries and stuffing, then topped with cranberry sauce. Deep fried bacon and cheese collard bites are also a new addition to this year's menu.

I got a chance to try both at the State Fair media luncheon. While the Thanksgiving roll was good, it was so carb heavy that I could barely take more than one bite. I can't imagine walking around the fair in 80 or 90 degree weather and eating this egg roll. I think the combo of the stuffing and potatoes is what weighs it down so much.

The collard bites, however, are delicious and lighter. They are also easier to share because you know you will be eating a ton of different things at the fair and won't want to fill up on just one item.
