For parents and their young history and design buffs:

The State Capitol in downtown Raleigh will hold behind the scenes tours to see areas of the historic building that are rarely open to the public. The so-called Signature Discovery Tour will include stops in the governor's suite, old treasurer's vault, the outdoor porticos and some of the attic space.

The one-hour tours are available by reservation only. The first is 10 a.m.., Feb. 1. Another is scheduled for 1 p.m., April 26. Participants must be age 10 or older. Also know that you'll be walking up stairs and in confined spaces. Tickets are $15 each. To reserve your spot, call the Capitol at 919-733-4994.
