Stand-up comedian killed in Durham DWI crash
Durham police charged a High Point man with driving while impaired in a two-car crash early Sunday that killed a stand-up comedian who had been performing in the area.
Posted — UpdatedInvestigators said Raul Herrera, 31, swerved into the back of a Nissan Maxima around 3:40 a.m. on Interstate 40 East near N.C. Highway 54. The impact sent both cars off the road, where they overturned.
The driver of the Maxima, Brian Edward Kiley, 38, of Goodlettsville, Tenn., was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kiley had been in North Carolina performing with another comedian in both Holly Springs on Feb. 15 and Newton in Catawba County Saturday night. At the time of the wreck, he was on his way to Raleigh-Durham International Airport to catch a flight back to Tennessee.
Kiley's friend, J.J. Brent, said the performances were supposed to have been his last for a while. Kiley had married in October and had shifted his focus toward his wife and young stepdaughter.
"The last thing he did on this earth was make people happy," Brent said.
Herrera was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He faces one count of driving while impaired, and the crash remains under investigation.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
