SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Authorities were searching Sunday for a 21-year-old Spring Lake man who has a cognitive impairment.

A Silver Alert was issued for Jorge F. "Lickey" Rangel around 5 p.m. He left home Friday afternoon and was seen walking along Spring Avenue toward Walmart.

Late Sunday night, authorities said he asked a customer at a Moore County Food Lion to drive him to Raleigh. The man declined, but did agree to drop him off at the Lee County line and give him directions to Wake County.

He was wearing blue jeans, blue and tan Nike shoes and a blue hooded sweatshirt.

Rangel is Hispanic, with short black hair and brown eyes. He is just over 6 feet tall and weighs about 190 pounds. He has a health condition that requires medication and authorities said they don't believe he has that medication or any money with him.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at 910-323-1500.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
