Baseball needs instant replay

Instant Replay appears to be on its way to Major League Baseball.

And it’s about time.

After years of resistance in baseball, commissioner Bud Selig says his “confidence is growing” that a limited replay system will be installed soon.

But here’s the catch: instant replay technology would apparently be used only to determine borderline home run calls.

It’s a start, at least.

Fair or foul, over the wall or not… umpires may soon have the option of consulting video evidence to “get the call right.”

But I think baseball should take things another step, and add replay usage for close plays in post-season games.

Safe/out calls can mean the difference between winning and losing, just ask the 1985 Cardinals.

Baseball’s proposed system would help prevent another Jeffrey Maher from “creating” a home run.

But in the post-season, let’s avoid another Jorge Orta.
