Game Blog: Carolina vs. LSU ppd. until Friday

The game will resume with Carolina batting with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first inning - first pitch is set for 7:08pm EST

Hello baseball fans, Jeff Gravley here in Omaha, Nebraska for North Carolina's 3rd game of the college world series. 4 days after beating LSU in the opener, the Heels have to beat the Tigers again or the season is over.

The sun is out at Rosenblatt Stadium but for the first time in the CWS there is a small threat of sprinkles. The tarp is neatly rolled up so we should start on time at 7pm.

The wind is blowing out to left field which may help North Carolina hit its first homer of the CWS. LSU needs no help with the winds. The Tigers have 99 knocks on the year compared to 56 for Carolina.

Blake Dean and Matt Clark lead the way for the Tigers in homers. Dean has 20 and Clark leads the nation with 27. Here's a quote from LSU hitting coach Cliff Godwin. (he played at ECU).

"We want them (Blake and Dean) to jump on anything they think they can hit out of the park no matter what the count is."

That's giving your sluggers the green light. Clark homered in the first meeting between the 2 but the Heels held LSU to a pair of longballs.

OK Matt Harvey, here's the ball for the biggest start of your baseball life. The Tar Heel freshman hasn't pitched since May 30th. He'll need to change speeds and locations against the Tigers.

Tar Heel 1st:
North Carolina hitters will face left-hander Blake Martin. He has a 5-3 record but a whopping 4.89 ERA. The Heels have 4 righties at the bottom of their line-up.

Good start with the ever reliable Dustin Ackley's single to left. Let's see if the Heels are a little more aggressive on the bases.

What a nice at bat by Tim Fedroff. He worked Martin hitting 4 foul balls until finding one he liked. The gap-hitting Tar Heels add another double to their record year. Fedroff to right center scoring Ackley....1-0

Tim Federowicz took one off the noggin which set up a nice double-steal by the Heels. That's the way you want to start an elimination game. Dictate your pace.

Kyle Seager takes one off the elbow but walks to first after a brief visit from the doc. Now they are loaded for Chad Flack. Today is his sister Ally's 8th birthday. All she wanted was a trip to Omaha and now that she is here she just wants to whip up on LSU. Her brother's walk makes it a 2-0 game.

Here's one way to kill momentum. Out comes the tarp. We are in a lightning delay. That means a 30-minute delay. Carolina still has the bases loaded with 1 out and DH Garrett Gore at the plate.

Tar Heel pitcher Matt Harvey has yet to throw a pitch but he'll have a lead when he does. A delay here doesn't bother a pitcher as much since he has yet to take the mound in game mode.

WEATHER UPDATE:

An NCAA official just walked through the press box and said 9:30 would be the earliest the game could resume. I'm looking at a live doppler on a TV station and there is another front behind this one. We'll sit tight.

WEATHER UPDATE NUMBER 2:
Here's the latest plan from Omaha. They hope to have the tarp cleared and players back on the field warming up at 9:30 eastern time. Play would then resume at 10pm eastern. They will stay here as long as it takes. With two games scheduled tomorrow, the NCAA would like to complete tonight's contest.
Scheduling Update:

The game has been postponed until tomorrow night - first pitch will be at 7:08pm EST. If Carolina wins, they will face Fresno State Saturday night at 7pm EST.
