Here’s the thing that amazes me: We’re in this horrible drought, yet we have lost two Football Friday shows this season because of rain or severe weather. Since 1989, this had happened only three other times – and that was because of hurricanes. And in this severe drought, it has also rained on two other Friday’s.
We certainly need the rain and are very grateful for it, but I will be honest – I wish all the rain had hit at the first of the week. Mother Nature always does what she wants, however, and you just have to roll with what it is. The weather pattern this fall has been unkind to high school football, though.
When I went home last Thursday, with what Greg and Mike were saying, I was pretty sure we weren’t going to have a show on Friday. I was so sure I didn’t even finish my preparations. And when I got up Friday morning and saw the deluge, the first words out of my mouth were not ”good morning,” but, “There’s no way anybody will play football tonight.”
By 4 o’clock that afternoon, 25 of the 27 games were had planned on covering were postponed. So it was an easy decision to cancel Football Friday. It was nice getting home before 1 a.m. but I will tell you, I always want to do the show and was disappointed not to have the opportunity to do one this past Friday.
Well, this Friday is supposed to be nice, and it’s the final week of the regular season with some very key games to be played. Conference championships and playoff seeds will be determined.
As I write this, we’re having some photographer issues because several of our regulars are off this week, so I’m not quite sure of the schedule. Right now, though, here’s what we’re looking at covering:
Southern Wayne at C.B. Aycock
Wilson Hunt at Wilson Beddingfield
Rocky Mount at Northern Nash
SouthWest Edgecombe at Wilson Fike
Hoke County at Richmond County
Jack Britt at Scotland County
Orange at Cedar Ridge
Midway at Hobbton
Southeast Raleigh at West Johnston
Lakewood at Union
Wallace-Rose Hill at James Kenan
South Johnston at Gray’s Creek
Westover at Douglas Byrd
Oxford Webb at Northern Vance
Franklinton at Southern Vance
Enloe at Millbrook
Wake Forest-Rolesville at Leesville Road
Middle Creek at Panther Creek
Fuquay-Varina at Cary
Broughton at Sanderson
Northwood at Cardinal Gibbons
Durham Riverside at Southern Durham
Person at Durham Hillside
Garner at Holly Springs
Athens Drive at Green Hope
Warren County at Bunn
Nash Central at Southern Nash
This schedule is very much subject to change. Hopefully, we’ll be able to add a couple.
Regardless, call 1-888-472-9725 to make sure that we get your school’s score.
I can’t believe this is the last week of the regular season. Next week, it’s on to the playoffs.
No rain this Friday, so we’ll look for you at 11:35 p.m. for another edition of Football Friday.
