Week 4 Picks: Deacs Only Ones To Win

Last week, in my fearless picks, I go 3 up and 3 down. Got the Virginia-over-Carolina pick right, but missed on Duke’s “historic” win and East Carolina’s close loss to Southern Mississippi. And I was way off on Boston College and Georgia Tech. The Eagles are looking to be the class of the ACC.

Picking games can put you in the asylum if you take it seriously. I was barely right on Virginia over Carolina while ECU lost it in the final 34 seconds and Duke won it on the last play of the game. Can drive you crazy can’t it?

Here we go with week No. 4.

Clemson at N.C. State

You can watch this one at noon on WRAL. Clemson so far looks to be one of the better teams in the ACC. They will come to Carter-Finley and try to run the heck out of the ball. Well, leave out the “trying.” They will run the heck out of the ball, and the Pack probably can’t do much about it.

State’s losing streak is over, but Clemson is not Wofford. I expect a new losing streak will start Saturday.

Hard to pick against the Tigers.

I go with Clemson.

North Carolina at South Florida

If South Florida can win at Auburn, they should beat Carolina in Tampa. They sure did rout the Heels in Chapel Hill last season and have a veteran club that is now a Top 25 team.

Carolina’s got a good passing game. T.J. Yates is good, and he’s got good receivers to throw it to.

But Carolina can’t run the ball and they can’t stop the run, which really doesn’t make for winning football.

UNC will play hard, but that won’t get it done.

South Florida will send the Tar Heels to 1-3.

Duke at Navy

Duke’s long nightmare ended last week at Northwestern, and Navy is a game they can win. They really can.

It will be interesting to see how Duke reacts. Will the Northwestern win take so much out of them that they will be flat in Annapolis, or will the taste of victory be so sweet that they’re coming back for more and will be sky high?

One thing about Navy, they will run the football. Duke will have to stop that or it will be a long afternoon.

A one-game win streak doesn’t convince. The Devils need to put together a few more to win me over.

Navy will sink the Devils on Saturday.

Maryland at Wake Forest

The Terps are 2-1 The Deacons are 1-2. Thing is, Wake’s losses were to Boston College and Nebraska, while Maryland’s wins were over Villanova and Florida International. Maryland was humbled by West Virginia. It was never close.

I like the Deacons in this game. Quarterback Riley Skinner is listed as probable. I just like the way the Deacons play. This is huge for both teams. If Wake Forest has any chance to defend its title, they must win this one, and I think they will.

My pick is Wake Forest.

Georgia Tech at Virginia

I saw Virginia beat Carolina last week, and I doubt they’ll be able to run the ball against the Jackets like they did at Carolina. I think Tech’s defense will confuse the Cavaliers’ young quarterbacks.

Boston College made Georgia Tech look bad. This week Tech could do the same to the Cavaliers.

I pick Georgia Tech on the road to put it away.

Penn State at Michigan

Penn State is undefeated while we all know of Michigan’s woes. If I were ole Joe Pa and the boys from Happy Valley, I would be afraid. Very afraid. Michigan is better than they’ve shown.

Here’s the upset special.

This won’t make the Lloyd Carr-haters forget Appalachian State. He’s passed the point of no return. He’s like the poor husband who has disgusted his wife so many times, nothing he can do will put him back in her good graces.

But beating Penn State will make everybody in the Maize and Blue feel a lot better.

That Nittany Lion fanatic, Greg Fishel, won’t forgive on this one, although he could have something to hold over me.

I go with Michigan.

For the season, I am 10 right and 8 wrong.

Trust me, I really do want to do better.

Maybe this week.
