FF's Fate Depends on the Weather

Well, my friends, Greg and Mike in the WeatherCenter, with their new DUALDoppler5000 radar, believe the long dry spell will end on Friday. Greg told me Wednesday night it could be a deluge. We’ll see.

Don’t get me wrong. I want rain as much as anyone, only selfishly. I was hoping it would come on Thursday, or maybe Sunday. Sunday’s always a great rainy day: read a little, watch the NFL, take a nap. Oh well, what will happen will happen – and no question. we do need the rain. Nobody will argue with that.

So, since some high schools around here call off games at the threat of rain, there’s no telling what Friday’s Football Friday schedule will actually look like. Our plans call for video coverage of 28 games involving teams from 20 counties.

Here’s our tentative line-up:

  • Broughton at Athens Drive
  • Sanderson at Cary
  • West Johnston at Garner
  • Clayton at Southeast Raleigh
  • Millbrook at Apex
  • Jordan at Enloe
  • Holly Springs at East Wake
  • Middle Creek at Leesville Road
  • East Chapel Hill at South Granville
  • Riverside at Wakefield
  • Northern Durham at Wake Forest-Rolesville
  • Southern Nash at Wilson Hunt
  • Roanoke Rapids at Tarboro
  • Southern Vance at Southwest Edgecombe
  • Midway at North Johnston
  • Knightdale at Smithfield-Selma
  • Wilson Fike at C.B. Aycock
  • Southern Wayne at Goldsboro
  • Chatham Central at Northwood
  • Southern Lee at Lee County
  • Scotland County at Purnell Swett
  • South View at Hoke County
  • Durham Hillside at Northern Vance
  • Bunn at Oxford Webb
  • E.E. Smith at Douglas Byrd
  • Harnett Central at Terry Sanford
  • Pine Forest at Overhills
  • Cape Fear at Western Harnett
I’ve had many people over the years ask me why do high schools postpone games because of rain. After all, I think all kids used to love to go out in the rain and play a little football. You know, roll around in the mud. I know I did. Football is considered an all-weather sport, and college games are rarely postponed because of the weather.

The biggest issue in high school is not the gate, as you might think, but the fields that are used weekly for not just varsity and JV football, but also soccer. Playing football on a wet, muddy field can ruin the surface for the rest of the year. That is a prime consideration.

Well, as the old saying goes, what will be will be. But if enough games are played, we’ll be there. As always, here’s the number to call in your scores: 1-888-472-9725. That is the best way to ensure your score gets reported on Friday nights.

So, depending on the weather, I hope we’ll see you at 11:35 p.m. on Football Friday.
