ACC Football Takes a Dive

The market for football in the post-expansion ACC has taken a serious nosedive. If the pattern of the past two weekends continues, ACC stock may fall through the floor later this fall.

Here are some of the bullet points that should concern the ACC football board of directors:

*The nation's longest losing streak - Duke with 22 straight.

*The nation's second-longest losing streak - N.C. State with nine straight.

*A .500 record against Conference USA. The ACC is 2-2 against C-USA.

*A narrow come-from-behind victory in one of the ACC's wins over CUSA. Florida State struggled past UAB, 34-24.

*A 41-point loss by the team predicted to win the ACC championship. Virginia Tech lost at LSU, 48-7.

*A 38-point loss by one of the league's traditional powers. Miami fell to Oklahoma, 51-13.

*A 4-5 record in televised non-conference games. That includes wins over Marshall and Samford.

*Eight teams that have at least one loss in the second week of the season.

There have been a few high notes. Georgia Tech has impressed defensively. Boston College has put up 75 points in two games. Clemson can really run the football. Maryland has shown it can handle Villanova and Florida International. North Carolina has explosive people in the passing game and on special teams.

But at this point the league has few legitimate contenders for the BCS Bowls, much less the national championship. Pursuit of the BCS and national supremacy were two major reasons why the ACC voted to expand.
